Volunteering

Girls on the Run of the Bay Area

Girls on the Run inspires girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Starting in Spring 2022 I started coaching a team of 15 runners in grades 3rd thru 5th. It has been great working with four different teams through November 2023 and helping them all work towards the goal of completing an end-of-season 5k as well as completing a community impact project.

Pacific Lutheran University Lute Welcome Program

I loved my time as a student at Pacific Lutheran University and now I am volunteering a bit of my time with other alumni volunteers on a monthly basis welcoming and congratulating newly admitted students to the PLU family! The time that I spend doing this is so great because I love that I get to reach out to these potential Lutes and unexpectedly share a bit of the PLU community right to their mailbox!.

Smithsonian Transcription Center

I visited Washington D.C. for the first time in the Spring of 2019 and fell in love with everything that the Smithsonian Institution has to offer. I wanted to support the Smithsonian (and even with being based in the other Washington) I am able to volunteer my time transcribing documents in the Smithsonian’s collection to help make these artifacts more accessible.

Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF)

The Seattle International Film Festival is one of the largest and most well attended film festivals in the United States. As a member of the volunteer Venue Crew, I helped with a variety of tasks including scanning festival tickets and passes; serving as a crowd liaison for line management outside of the theater; distributing, collecting, and tallying ballots for voting on films; ushering patrons through the theater; and cleaning the theater after film screenings.

I volunteered multiple days throughout the 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 festivals.

Special Events

Beyond the continuous volunteer projects that I have worked on, I have also enjoyed volunteering at special events for organizations that I love.

  • The Bay Area Book Festival is a weekend long literary event hosted across numerous venues in Downtown Berkeley. I volunteered on both days of the festival in both venue support capacities as well as volunteer headquarters coordination.

  • The Seattle Scotch and Beer Fest was a fundraising event for the Seattle Humane Society. The 2019 event was hosted at the Fremont Studios on April 19th and 20th. Attendees supported the Seattle Humane Society just by purchasing tickets to the event and had the opportunity to try a wide variety of scotch, beer, and cocktails. The event was supported by over 300 volunteers to help the 4,000+ event attendees. I volunteered on Friday, April 19th helping in a variety of different roles including preparing items to be picked up at the entrance to the event, answering attendee questions, and helping pour drinks for guests.

  • The Fremont Fair is an annual tradition in Seattle, attracting over 100,000 guests to this neighborhood of Seattle for a fun-filled weekend. The fair kicks off the start of Summer with a festival of music, parades, artists, food, and more! With so much going on and so many people attending this free festival, many volunteers are needed to make it a success. Volunteer roles were available with the following responsibilities: poster posting, production, greeter, and beverage pouring. I volunteered in the greeter role in 2017, which entailed greeting fair goers as they entered the festival, handing out maps, and answering general questions.

  • Splash! is the Seattle Aquarium’s annual fundraising gala benefiting the aquarium’s mission of “Inspiring conservation of our marine environment.” The event included a silent auction and reception at the aquarium as well as an off-site live auction and dinner. Many volunteers are needed in various roles for guests to enjoy themselves throughout the night at the gala. I volunteered in the registration support role in 2016. In this role, I supported other members of the registration team by greeting and checking in guests; distributing bidder packages; and answering questions to support to silent auction and reception portion of this event.

  • The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) has hosted “REMIX” events, which is a full evening of exploring the museum along with performances, tours, live music, and activities for visitors to enjoy. The event encourages visitors to create, move, engage, and play throughout the museum.

At the March 11, 2016 REMIX event, I served as a volunteer at one of the main entrances helping with ticketing, greeting visitors, and answering questions. This was a great experience to engage with many of the visitors of the event and to utilize my customer service skills in a new environment.
